Service dogs assist only their handlers with their disabilities, while therapy dogs are expected to interact with people other than their caretakers and provide them with therapeutic support. Service dog owners generally do not want members of the public interfering with their dogs while they are on duty. A therapy dog is intended to work for others and must be invited to places such as schools and hospitals to work with the individuals there.
Unlike an emotional support animal, you do not need a letter of recommendation for a therapy dog. It is up to the organization or individual you work for to determine whether they want to hire you and your therapy dog. A therapy dog works on location as an invited guest of the facility; presenting a letter or certification may not be necessary when showing up for work.
Despite being categorized as comfort dogs and frequently utilized in therapeutic contexts, therapy dogs lack the legal status of service dogs under the ADA, thus lacking equivalent public access rights. Uniform regulations for therapy dog certification do not exist at the state or national level, with varying guidelines among different organizations. Generally, therapy dogs should undergo training, carry insurance, and be licensed by the non-profit offering their services.
Typically, therapy dog handlers are volunteers, and they don't receive direct payment for their services. However, some organizations or facilities may cover certain expenses, such as transportation or training costs. It's more about the joy of making a positive impact through the therapy dog than financial compensation. At Tails of Love, the magic these dog create is our currency.
